This Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent. On this day the Peace Candle, also known as the ‘Bethlehem Candle’, will be lit. The Bethlehem Candle is purple, signifying repentance and royalty. It recalls the preparations Mary and Joseph made for Jesus’ birth. As we’re getting ready for Christmas, let’s make our plans and carry them out. But, it is important not get so wrapped up in our own preparations that we’re too busy to appreciate what God is doing in our lives and that Advent is preparing us for the birth of Christ, our Saviour. Today, Fr. Frank led Year 6 in a lovely Advent reflection all about prayer.
Here’s what else we have been up to this week…
In Maths this week we began to complete our work on fractions looking at using bar models to help solve word problem.
In English we began our shared write and used Dickens’ style to describe the city of London on a foggy Christmas Eve as Scrooge makes his way home. We built tension and introduced the idea of phantoms and spirits through metaphor.
In RE we looked at the meaning and symbolism of the different parts of the Advent Wreath. We focused on the significance of each candle and their colour as well as the circular shape of the wreath. The class had a go at drawing the advent wreath in their own books and labelling each part.
Advent
On Thursday we attended an advent reflection in Church lead by Father Frank, this followed our reconciliation on Tuesday. It was a time to remember the meaning of advent as the world around us prepares for Christmas.
In Science completed writing our experiment ready to carry it out next week.
In History we listened to Emilia tell us about her great grandad who was an engineer during WWII. She very kindly brought in photographs, medals, newspaper articles and his air force wings. As a class we then went on to write about how we might feel being evacuated during Operation Pied Piper.
