This Sunday marks the third week of advent, when the Hope candle will be lit. During the third week of Advent we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day. This Sunday is often called ‘Gaudete Sunday’ as we reflect on the joy the shepherd’s felt at the birth of Jesus.

We have continued opening our class advent calendar, which has been taking us on a journey to the birth of Christ. In our RE lesson we were reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and Jesus as the Incarnation: God made man. God sent Jesus, who is truly God and truly human, as the fulfillment of His promise to send us a Saviour.

We also had the privilege of watch Reception’s and KS1’s nativities this week, when they showed us the story of Jesus’ birth through song, dance and acting!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have had another go at an arithmetic and reasoning paper. This will give me a good insight as to where each child’s strengths/areas of development are.

In English we have finished our shared write and the class have begun their independent write. Next week, we will be using every English lesson to complete this extended piece of write.….I am determined to read all of their completed stories before my last day! We also had another go at a reading and GPS SATs paper.

In Science we have completed our experiment!

Almost there….

As this term nears the end, so does my journey with my Year 6 class as their teacher. I can hardly believe how fast these past four months have gone. In spite of this, we are still not ready to take our foot off the accelerator….we have plenty to fit into our last four days! I am so impressed with what each and every child has personally achieved so far and I will certainly be making the most of our last week together. I have already promised the class that I will give them ALL of me, and they need to give me ALL of them, before we break up for Christmas. Thank you to all of my Year 6 parents for your continued support this year and I look forward to giving them my continued support when Mrs Murphy returns in January.

Have a lovely weekend!

This Sunday marks the second Sunday of Advent. On this day the Peace Candle, also known as the ‘Bethlehem Candle’, will be lit. The Bethlehem Candle is purple, signifying repentance and royalty. It recalls the preparations Mary and Joseph made for Jesus’ birth. As we’re getting ready for Christmas, let’s make our plans and carry them out. But, it is important not get so wrapped up in our own preparations that we’re too busy to appreciate what God is doing in our lives and that Advent is preparing us for the birth of Christ, our Saviour. Today, Fr. Frank led Year 6 in a lovely Advent reflection all about prayer.

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths this week we began to complete our work on fractions looking at using bar models to help solve word problem.

In English we began our shared write and used Dickens’ style to describe the city of London on a foggy Christmas Eve as Scrooge makes his way home. We built tension and introduced the idea of phantoms and spirits through metaphor.

In RE we looked at the meaning and symbolism of the different parts of the Advent Wreath. We focused on the significance of each candle and their colour as well as the circular shape of the wreath. The class had a go at drawing the advent wreath in their own books and labelling each part.

Advent

On Thursday we attended an advent reflection in Church lead by Father Frank, this followed our reconciliation on Tuesday. It was a time to remember the meaning of advent as the world around us prepares for Christmas.

In Science completed writing our experiment ready to carry it out next week.

In History we listened to Emilia tell us about her great grandad who was an engineer during WWII. She very kindly brought in photographs, medals, newspaper articles and his air force wings. As a class we then went on to write about how we might feel being evacuated during Operation Pied Piper.

This Sunday 1st December marks the first Sunday of Advent and the start to the Church’s new liturgical year. On this day, the Hope candle will be lit. Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation and penance. In Year 6 this week we made our Advent Promises. As we were writing these, we were mindful of the ways in which we can use our promise to help spread the Kingdom of God.

WELL DONE TO THE GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM!!!!

The girls football team played exceptionally and due to their team work and resilience, plus a huge amount of skill, won the tournament. We are so proud.

Here is what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have had a big focus on fractions particularly division. We also had a look at SAT paper questions on this topic . This was a good way to ease us into the reasoning papers and give the class an idea of the styles of questions we could be asked.

In English we look looked at A Christmas Carol. To introduce the text we put the novel into 10 scenes and acted them out so that we all had an overview of the story. We then used our active approaches to delve into the character of Scrooge in order to create a character profile so that we could compare his initial characterisation to the person he becomes after his ghostly encounters.

In Science we looked at the role of the circulatory system during exercise and we worked scientifically to design an experiment to support our theory.

In Art we began working with acrylics to create a night sky and we began to draw robins.

🌟 AWARD WINNERS! 🌟

The Golden Award went to Emilia for constantly striving to be her best self

The Writing Award went to Darcy

The Maths award went to Connie for her go get it attitude.

Monitoring tips and strategies for parents of young children (Ages 5-10)

    1. Keep children’s devices in shared spaces: Children should use the internet and social media in common areas, such as the living room, where parents can easily keep an eye on their activities. To that end, set family ground rules that prohibit device usage in bedrooms and bathrooms, which allow opportunities to engage in risky behaviors.

    2. Establish clear rules and communication: Set clear expectations about appropriate online behaviour, time limits, and the types of websites or apps they can access. Maintain open lines of communication, so your child feels comfortable discussing any concerns or encounters they may have had.

    3. Parental controls and filtering: Make use of the parental control settings available on devices, web browsers, games and apps to restrict access to inappropriate content. Install child-friendly search engines and age-appropriate apps that offer a safer online experience.

Top Tips for Using & Reviewing Parental Controls. This free guide provides expert advice on how to effectively activate and maintain parental controls on children’s devices.

Monday marked Armistice Day: November 11th. Year 6 led a special remembrance assembly. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1919 to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. We wanted to gather as a school as a mark of respect to remember and pray for all those fallen soldiers, who have bravely fought for our country in past wars, and also for those who are still fighting for our country now. Year 6 led this assembly so beautifully-many members of staff commented on how well they led this reflection and how respectful they were. Our

Remembrance Assembly

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have been using our knowledge of fractions to add and subtract mixed numbers to solve word problems.

In English we are planning and starting to write our class Biography. We are planning each paragraph together and then drafting each paragraph as a class, before the children then innovate our class write into their books. Our focus person for our Biography is Usain Bolt. Next week, the children will then plan and write a biography independently. They will be able to use our class write to help them to structure and organise their own piece of writing.

In RE we started a new unit on ‘Justice’. We looked at what Justice actually means and what God teaches us about justice. We also looked at examples of injustice happening in our world today but also examples in our everyday life. Year 6 then created posters/leaflets all about Justice.

In Science we looked at the components of our blood and the differences between veins, arteries and capillaries in order to understand their function.

In History we have continued to investigate the effects on children during World War II and enjoyed handling artefacts from this period. In fact we are considering creating a pop up museum in the hall so that we can share our knowledge! Watch this space!

This has been a very busy week for year six: with a football tournament for the boys on Monday, a trip to Hangar 42 on Wednesday, a girls football match on Friday plus preparations for our Remembrance Assembly on Monday and that is without mentioning all the learning we have been doing!

As you can see from the photographs we had an extremely interesting day building on our knowledge of the Battle of Britain. At the end of the day there was a competition and the winner was able to sit in the cockpit of a spitfire! Well done Elsie.

Well done to the year six girls football team for winning their match.

The year 6 boys played well but unfortunately lost their match, however they demonstrated great sportsmanship.

Well done to all the player!

"All Saints Day serves as a reminder that we too are called to be saints." Pope Francis

We welcomed in this new half term with a whole school mass to celebrate the feast of All Saints.

We appreciated the time to reflect on what it is to be saint. Fr. Frank talked about how the word ‘Saint’ means holy and to be a saint is to treat others as we would treat Jesus. I think Our Lady’s is full of Saints in the making!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week…

In Maths we have been consolidating our understanding of equivalent and simplifying fractions.

In English we have started our new unit on Biography writing.

In RE we were asking and responding to questions about the Kingdom of God. We thought of two questions we found difficult to answer ourselves and went around the class to ask our friends to respond to them. Once we had our friend’s response we then wrote a reflection on what we thought.

In History we have continued with our Battle of Britain topic and we are enjoying role playing the parts of a pilot sharing his knowledge and we are hoping to record these interview on our trip to Hangar 42 on the 13th November.

"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them." Genesis 1:27

On Tuesday some of year 6 had the privilege of attending the Show Racism the Red card conference, at Blackpool Football Club. This day had a huge impact on all of them and they took so much away from it. They had three workshops: one was about hate crime, another on discrimination and prejudice and the other was a tour around the football grounds. They also had the opportunity to meet some of the players and on their return to school this week presented what they had learnt to the rest of the class and year 4.

Still on the topic of football, our wonderful girls team played a remarkable game and we are so proud of their success.

MAD SCIENCE

On Friday, thanks to the wonderful work the current year 6 did with Mrs McVey in year 5 on their daffodil experiments, the whole school were able to enjoy an assembly delivered by the Mad Science company on Space. Then year 6 took part in a workshop on light, colour and how fireworks made to be so colourful. It was fantastic as you can tell by the photographs below!

Well done to Grace for winning the Golden award for her fantastic presentation on the Kingdom of God.

Congratulation to Peter for the writing award and to Elsie for her great maths work.

I hope you have a wonderful half term.

In our class worship this week we have been reflecting on God’s love for us. His love is unconditional and the greatest love of all. Well someone who showed God’s love through his actions was Saint Maximilian Kolbe. He was such an inspirational man, who put others before himself, something that lead to his own death. He sacrificed his own life for that of a stranger!

Here’s what else we have been up to this week….

In Maths we have covered prime numbers, square and cube numbers and order of operations!! It’s been a busy week. The class have done so well, and there have been some challenging questions we have looked at together as a class.

In English we are planning and starting to write our class diary. We are planning each paragraph together and then drafting each paragraph as a class, before the children then innovate our class write into their books. They will be able to use our class write to help them to structure and organise their own piece of writing.

In Science we finished describing the different functions of the parts of the circulatory system .

In History we watched some news reels from the Battle of Britain and made notes on what daily life was like for an RAF pilot. We then used these notes to consider how an interviewer would ask questions of the pilot so that we can recreate the scene and record our findings. We also had the chance to read a genuine letter from a real pilot during the Battle of Britain-its was quite emotional to read!

🌟 AWARD WINNERS! 🌟

The Golden Award went to Zahra for her determination to improve her work

The Writing Award went to Hallie for a fantastic diary draft.

The Maths award went to Lily T for her amazing maths skills.

  • Reading books - the class have completed their STAR Reading tests and been given their new ZPDs. I have said that they can finish reading the book they were in the middle of, even if it is not within their range. However, once they have finished that book they must then pick books within their range. Please can someone from home sign their records any time they complete home reading. In Year 6, I would expect them to be reading at least between 3 and 4 times a week.

All the children who ran for the position of head boy and head girl did an amazing job: reading with confidence; engaging their audience by making eye contact and ensuring that their voice could be heard. Well done.

That being said it made it extremely difficult for the whole school to decide on 2 people!!

Mrs Mannix felt that as there were tied votes for head girl this year there will be two head girls and 3 deputies.

The results are (as voted by the school):

Head Boy: Alexander Deputy: Kurt

Head Girl: Mia and Lily T Deputy: Lilly Ch Grace and Hallie

Not only have year 6 been exceptional role models in school they have also taken their values into Church today for their class mass on The Kingdom of God. They were exploring and questioning as part of our RE topic- What is a kingdom? How do I contribute to this kingdom? How do my actions grow the kingdom?

The children all brought an object that was important to them to demonstrate the Kingdom of God is not and object but a place we all contribute too, it is not and object but it is within us all and when we welcome this kingdom then :

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.

This week, I have spoken to the class about preparing their speeches for Head Boy/Girl, should they wish to apply for the role.

We have practised the speeches in front of the class and I am impressed with the children’s confidence.

This year we are able to read the speeches in front of the whole school on Monday 16th September.

Please ensure you have your speeches perfected and at hand on Monday morning!

I am so pleased at the number of children in Year 6 that are applying for the Head Boy/Girl role….reading publicly, in front of an audience, is a huge skill and confidence boost in itself. In Year 6 ALL pupils will be given a role of responsibility, so even those who are not selected for the role of head girl/boy or deputy head girl/boy, and those who did not apply, will have a duty within the school. This could be digital leader, sports leader, prefect, classroom monitor, for example. We find that it is really important, and valuable, for the Year 6’s to be given roles of responsibility as part of the preparation for High School.

Here are some top tips for when you are writing your speech….

  • Introduce yourself-not all children in school will know you by name!

  • Talk about your time at Our lady’s so far-What responsibilities have you had? What have you achieved? What good qualities will you bring to the role?

  • Talk about why you want the position

  • What suggestions do you have to make Our Lady’s an even better place?

  • How has the ethos at Our Lady’s help to shape you into the person you are? How will you inspire others in the school? (Growth Mindset-resilience?)

Good luck to all applicants…remember to speak eloquently and confidently and try not to look down at your speech-engage with the audience as must as possible. Remember DON’T RUSH !

Here is what else we have been up to this week….

In Maths we have been focusing on place value. We have been reading and writing 6-digit numbers, understanding the importance of zero as a place holder as well! There is a big difference between 604, 521 and 64,521!! We have also looked at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.

In English we have focused aspects of grammar and vocabulary choice for effect. We have also had discussions about what nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs are…we will do more on this in our GPS lesson next week.

In RE we continued with our first unit ‘The Kingdom of God’. We talked about what we thought the Kingdom of God was.

In History we started our topic on ‘The Battle of Britain’ by using our concept map vocabulary to show what we already know about the BoB and WWII. We then ordered some key events from WWII chronologically and created a time line of key events.

Home work

Home work expectations:

Home work is a key part of learning progression in year 6 and it is essential that all home work is completed by Thursday. I am sure you will encourage them to stick to a deadline and begin to work independently in preparation for high school. If your child does not understand any of the concepts please do not hesitate to let me know and I can go over the work with them after school.

I will post the homework for the week on this page.

I will give the children spellings on a Friday to be tested on the following Friday.

Please make sure that your child is completing at least 2 Bedrock sessions a week as this improves their vocabulary which in turn supports their reading comprehension and writing skills.

I have given the children an Autumn term work book for maths which will be used both for home work and in school.

All the children are familiar with IXL and TT Rock Stars.

i am sure I do not need to tell you the importance of reading every day. The reading record books are checked on a daily basis so we can track their reading time.

HOME WORK for 13.9.2024 to be handed in on 19.9.2024

  1. Maths work book page 6and 7

  2. Bedrock

  3. Times tables 7

A huge welcome to my new Year 6 class! This week I have spent time getting to know my lovely new class and hopefully the class now know me a lot better too! Although we have spent time getting to know the Year 6 routine and expectations, we have also hit the ground running, and made a good start to our learning.

I know Year 6 is a big year, not just for the children, but also for you parents too! Your (not so little) baby is getting ready to make that transition to high school next year and this is their last year of Primary school! With this is mind, I want to make sure that this is a successful and positive year for all. As a Year 6 team, we will work collaboratively with parents and children to ensure all of the class achieve their full potential and we will support you in any way we can. Yes, Year 6 is a challenging year, but it is also such an exciting year full of opportunity and responsibility. I look forward to starting this journey together.

Here is what we have been up to this week…

In Maths we started back with our ‘Fluent in 5’ from day one and I must say, I have been really impressed with the arithmetic skills in this class so far! In our Power Maths, our focus has been on place value up to 10,000,000. The class have done incredibly well with place value so far and we have looked at some challenging problems as a class too.

In English we made a start on our new unit focusing on the book ‘Rose Blanche’. We explored some key vocabulary and created descriptive sentences of scenes in the book using expanded noun phrases.. We also started with our ‘Grammar Warm-ups’ and reading comprehension, alongside our ‘Get Spelling’ activities.

In RE we have introduced our first topic, ‘The Kingdom of God’. We have explored and discussed some of the key values of the Kingdom of God and have written explanations as to why we think certain values are so important. We also used bible references to support our reasons. This week we also took part in daily class worships, and on Wednesday we had the chance to plan our own shared worships, ready to deliver to the class in future weeks.

In History we had an introductory lesson to our new topic, ‘The Battle of Britain.’ We looked at some key vocabulary and made links where we could and we have started to look at some key events of WW2, ordering them chronologically on a timeline…

🌟 AWARD WINNERS! 🌟

The Golden Award went to the whole of year 6 for making a fantastic start to the new school year.

The Writing Award went to James for stunning descriptive work. Well done!

The Maths award went to Grace for an impressive start to her maths.

Notices:

PE days- Wednesdays this half term.

  • Water bottles-these need to be filled and brought in each day and taken home to be cleaned at the end of each day. Each child in the class was provided with a school water bottle-please can you ensure these are the bottles that are brought in daily and not their own water bottle from home.

  • Spellings- I gave the class a spelling test this week and they will come home with their spelling lists to practice next week. New spellings will be given on a Friday and they will be tested on them the following Friday.

  • Reading books - we have not yet completed a STAR Reading test, so the children do not have their new ZPDs yet. As soon as they are complete, the class will come home with their reading book and record. This will need to be signed by an adult each time they read at home. However, the children have continued to take a reading book under their year 5 ZPD whilst we are waiting for the computer system to renew the data.

  • Homework- I have not set any homework this week. From next week, homework will be set on a Friday and due for the following Wednesday (I check work has been complete on a Thursday morning). In terms of expectations, I will set Maths & English units on IXL , ask for at least one Bedrock lesson to be completed and spellings and times tables will be set too. Spellings and times tables tests will always be on a Friday.

  • Head Boy & Girl - All those who have shown interest in being Head Boy or Girl this year will need to prepare a speech to deliver to teachers & KS2. I have asked that those interested write their speech at home and bring them in next week. I am happy to proof read any speeches and/or give tips/prompts!

Other roles & responsibilities- In Year 6 every child in the class will have a responsibility. All of the class will be prefects and we also have roles such as librarians, dining hall monitors, assembly/prayer leaders, assembly set-up team…. I think it is really important for all the children to take on more responsibility as they enter Year 6; this is also good preparation for high school!

  • Contact information- if you need to contact me for any reason, please email using year6@our-lady.blackpool.sch.uk. I do apologise as I have not got access to this email address yet, but this is being sorted. I will hopefully have full access by early next week.

  • Water Park- Year 6 will visit Water Park is in June. I will organise a parent meeting regarding cost, requirements etc before the end of this half term.

Thank you, Year 6, for a lovely first week back! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

The Golden Award was received by the whole class for their efforts.

Trip on Tuesday

Please ensure that the disclaimer forms are returned by Monday 15th July.

The year six team is excited to be taking the class to skateboarding and street art. Ralphy House is a special project set up by the House of Wingz team in Blackpool in remembrance of Ralph. Ralph’s House is a new skate facility designed to help beginners build their confidence and to give more advanced skaters a safe and creative space to hang out. Supported by Live like Ralph, the space is designed to encourage more young people to skateboard. Find out more here.

The year sixes have shown a keen interest in Art and I know they will enjoy letting their creative juices flow whilst producing some street art that they will bring home to show you.

Trust me… this is going to be great!
