Good afternoon everyone,
This week has been a very busy but very exciting time in Year 2!
Our worship this week focused upon taking action. We learned how Jesus took action against the money lenders who were misusing God’s temples. We learned that Jesus prayed to God and wanted to make sure He did the right thing. We thought about how we can take action against injustices in our world - bullying, poverty, loneliness, etc. We discussed how, even though we are still small, we can still make a difference with our actions. Even something as simple as smiling at someone can make the world a better place!
We also had a visit from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service who talked to Year 2 on fire safety and the need for a fire safety plan. We were given homework to check our smoke alarm works and ring the fire service if it does not or if we do not have an alarm. Here are a few pictures.
English - This week we have moved onto our diary unit. We thought about character’s thoughts and words and how this can conflict with each other. We spent a lot of time exploring and using new vocabulary and we learned how to accurately use apostrophes for contracted forms of words (I’ve, we’ll, etc). On Friday we did some work on instructions writing and followed instructions to create crafts.
Maths - In Maths we continued our work on multiplication. We learned more about repeated addition and how this links to multiplication. We learned how to use pictures to solve multiplication problems and created our own. We also learned how arrays can represent multiplication problems and how multiplication is commutative (4 x 3 is the same as 3 x 4)
Science - In Science we looked at how animals and plants meet their nutritional needs in their habitats and how energy is transferred from the sun through different animals.
RE - In RE, we looked at the 7 sacraments, focusing upon and describing Baptism, Eucharist and Reconciliation. We thought about the scripture in the Bible which leads Catholics to take these sacraments.
Geography - No Geography this week due to making Mothers’ Day cards!
PE - Our Wednesday PE session focused on striking and fielding skills as we used bats to hit balls and collect them. On Friday we were finally able to get into the hall to do some gymnastics.
Computing - We continued to type up our science reports.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Spelling
Mr W’s group - the -y suffix for words ending in ‘e’. - We need to drop the ‘e’ before adding -y.
Mrs B’s group - next set of Year 2 common exception words.
There is also a handwriting sheet of these words.

Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
On Thurday we celebrated World Book Day. We had a brilliant time creating bookmarks, sharing stories and doing a book scavenger hunt. The children looked fantastic! Thank you so much for your wonderful support.
Friday 15th March - Brian House Own Clothes Day - we are inviting the children to come to school in their own clothes on this day and for parents to donate to our chosen charity. (PLEASE NOTE as it is a Friday Year 2 will have PE on this day - so remember suitable footwear.)
Tuesday 19th March - KS1 Open Afternoon - all parents are invited to join us in class on this day anytime after 2pm to 4pm*** to see what we do in class, talk to your child and their teachers about their learning and have a look round our class. We hope you can join us! ***If you are intending to come to school after 3.10pm, please ensure your child is collected at home time as we are unable to keep any children who are not booked into after school club.
Friday 22nd March - KS1 Palm Sunday liturgy - join us in Church at 2.30pm to see KS1 retell the story of Palm Sunday. I will be sending readings and words home for Year 2 to practise. They do not need to know these off by heart and can take the words into the service with them.
Wednesday 27th March - Year 2 Lenten Reflection in church - You are very welcome to join us in church at 2.40pm for a lenten reflection being led by Father Frank. The children will be bringing their bags and coats into church so if you attend they can be picked up from church, rather than returning to school.
Those not able to attend, please be aware that, due to parent pick ups in church, we may be quite late returning to school. I advise you to check in the church building first before going to collect your child from school on this date. After school club will run as normal for those needing to attend.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Hall
