Good afternoon everyone,
This week in our liturgies we have been thinking about Lent. Our worship has focused upon Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness without food and how He wanted to become closer to His father in heaven by praying and silently reflected. Whilst he was there, he was tempted three times by the devil to test God’s love for him but refused each time.
We have been thinking about Jesus’ example during the Lenten season and how we can resist temptation to make the wrong choices and to do unkind things by following Jesus’ example and praying to Him to ask for help. We also learned that, because we are human, we will always make mistakes and give in to doing the wrong thing but that we always must try and make things right by both saying and showing we are sorry.
On Thursday, Father Frank come to lead us in liturgy where we learned about the importance of saying sorry at the start of Mass. Father told us that Jesus said “whatever you do to the least of my people, you do to me” and this means that when we hurt others, we hurt Jesus too. Therefore asking God and Jesus for ‘mercy’ is asking them for forgiveness by saying sorry for our wrongdoings.
English - This week we have been analysing the writer’s choices in our example text. We have thought about the effect their word choices have on us and how these are usually intended. We also identified the key features of a setting narrative and created descriptive sentences using personification. We also began to plan our own setting narrative using an illustration from the Night Gardener.
Maths - In Maths we have had a big focus on a very tricky area of money - finding change. We have spent the majority of the week ensuring we are confident in the steps needed to calculate and give change from amounts in both pounds and pence and have also learned how to give change in pence from £1. We also explored multistep word problems involving money.
Science - In Science we have researched a world habitat (desert, rainforest or ocean) and have used our learning to produce a plan for a non-chronological report about this habitat next week
RE - In RE, we looked at symbols of Lent and why they are used. We also looked at Mass and thought about the behaviours we should and should not show during ass in church.
Geography - We began our islands unit by learning what islands are. We then used 2 figure grid references to identify islands and non-islands in Europe and Central America.
PE - Our Wednesday PE session continued to focus upon hitting a tennis ball. Our Friday session focused upon striking and fielding skills, building up to playing small-team rounders games.
Computing - We used word processing software to type text and change the size, style, colour of this and add bold, underline and italics. We also learned how to use caps lock and how to print our work.
Please continue to practise counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.
Please practise the year 1 and year 2 common exception words sent home before half term. The children need to be able to read and write (spelling correctly) each one of these by the end of year 2.
Spelling
Mr Whetnall’s group - /ee/ sound spelt with -y to create adjectives. For the homework, you need to double the last consonant in the root word before adding the -y.
Mrs Bowdell’s group - Next set of Year 2 common exception words.
There is also a handwriting sheet.
Reading
Isle of Coll reading comprehension
Maths
Finding change money worksheet. REMEMBER TO DRAW THE TENS AND ONES IN THE COLUMNS, NOT JUST WRITE THE NUMBER OF TENS AND ONES. THIS IS VITAL TO THE CHILDREN’S UNDERSTANDING.
Today was Demi’s last day with us at Our Lady’s. He is moving onto a new school where we are sure he will continue to thrive and be a fantastic friend.
We wish you all the best, Demi. We will all miss you lots.
Golden Award - William - He has always been a thoughtful and well-mannered young man but his listening and sense of responsibility has really grown this week!
Writing Award - Fionn - For working hard on his ideas and presentation.
Maths Award - Willow - for a great attitude towards all her maths learning.
We received a response to our letters from the Prime Minister’s Office!
Year 2 PE lessons will take place on Wednesday and Friday. Please come to school in PE kit on these days.
Water bottles - all the children were given a new school bottle. This will come home each night to be cleaned and re-filled. Please only use the school bottles and ensure your child brings theirs each day. Lost water bottles can be replaced at the school office, but I am afraid you will have to pay for those. Year 2 have green tops.
I will not be in class on a Thursday afternoon, as it is my release time. This will be covered by Mrs Bowdell and Miss Andrew and is also when the children will have Music with Mrs Watson.
Party Invitations - I am afraid that Mrs Bowdell and I will not be able to give out party invitations in class. Please do not send your child into class with them for them to give out - it creates upset and fuss about something that takes place outside of school.Thank-you for your understanding with this matter.
Key Rings - please do not put key rings onto your child’s school bag, it creates fuss in class and then upset if they are lost.
School bags - please continue to use the red book bag that your child was given in Reception, we don’t not have the room to store large bags. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
Thursday 7th March - World Book Day. We are inviting all of the children to come to school on this day dressed as a book character and to bring their favourite book to share. (Please make sure these are clearly named with your child’s name)
Friday 15th March - Brian House Own Clothes Day - we are inviting the children to come to school in their own clothes on this day and for parents to donate to our chosen charity. (PLEASE NOTE as it is a Friday Year 2 will have PE on this day - so remember suitable footwear.)
Tuesday 19th March - KS1 Open Afternoon - all parents are invited to join us in class on this day anytime after 2pm to 4pm*** to see what we do in class, talk to your child and their teachers about their learning and have a look round our class. We hope you can join us! ***If you are intending to come to school after 3.10pm, please ensure your child is collected at home time as we are unable to keep any children who are not booked into after school club.
Friday 22nd March - KS1 Palm Sunday liturgy - join us in Church at 2.30pm to see KS1 retell the story of Palm Sunday. I will be sending readings and words home for Year 2 to practise. They do not need to know these off by heart and can take the words into the service with them.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mr Whetnall, Mrs Bowdell and Mrs Hall
